No CommentsBest Baby Skin Care Tips – Great Tips For Taking Care of Your Baby’s Skin
Many new moms don’t often think about the need to care for their baby’s skin, because they feel so soft, supple and smooth; a perfect skin texture that all of us can only dream of. Although most moms are more concerned with diaper and heat rash than baby acne, but nonetheless, baby skin care should not be ignored.
Although baby’s skin is much less oily than adult’s, it does experience hormonal surge during birth time; and since melanin or pigment production is still low, babies can be prone to acne breakouts as well.
Tips and general guidelines for baby skin care
Make sure you always protect your baby from ultraviolet or sunlight exposure, as mentioned, melanin production in babies is low, therefore they are more susceptible to sunburn. During the first few months, keep your newborn out of direct sunlight. If you take your baby outside, make sure you cover your baby with sun protective clothing, a wide brimmed hat with mall air holes in the top to prevent over heating, and baby sunglasses.
If you are taking your baby out in a stroller, use a shade source such as an umbrella hood on a stroller. Don’t use sunscreen products until your baby is six months old as they can be too harsh for your baby’s skin, but after that, sunscreen is absolutely necessary to protect them from direct sunlight. Wind and cold can also cause dry skin so don’t forget to protect your baby when outside.
There are many natural baby skin care products specially formulated for babies, use the products as directed. Never ever use adult’s skin care products for your baby as they can be too strong for your baby’s skin. Sometimes the normal detergents you use can irritate your baby’s skin, if so, you may need to switch to those detergents that are formulated especially for baby’s laundry.
Always change your baby’s diapers as soon as it is wet or soiled. Urine and feces contain bacteria that can lead to infections and diaper rash, and must be washed away with warm water or baby wipes. Make sure you use those baby wipes that don’t contain alcohol, which can dry out your baby’s skin. Clean gently but thoroughly the folds of the legs, crotch area and buttocks before putting on another diaper.
Diaper rash is very uncomfortable so use products that contain zinc oxide ointment (such as Desitin Ointment) or petroleum (such as Vaseline) to protect your baby’s skin from moisture. These products are formulated especially for this common baby skin problem.
Don’t bathe your baby too often as it can sap your baby’s skin of moisture. Always use warm water (not hot) for bathing your baby. If your baby has cradle cap which resembles scaly dirty-looking skin, use a soft brush to scrub the top of head gently. If cradle cap doesn’t go away, have a baby’s physician take a look. If the air in your home is dry, consider getting a humidifier to add moisture.
The baby’s skin pores are much smaller than adult’s and hence it is harder for the sweat to be released from the body, this can lead to pores clog and heat rash. Heat rash could also develop due to hot temperature and snug fitting clothing. Be sure to dress your baby in comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that’s appropriate for the temperature.
Proper baby skin care can mean the difference between a happy baby and one that’s constantly whining and complaining.
